DISCOMFORT – COMES ON IMMEDIATELY

Abdominal cramps are one of the most well-known side effects of menstrual bleeding.  It’s not the only part of the body that becomes painful during your period. Butt pain during period days may be especially common if your uterus tilts toward your back, says Christine Herde, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., vice chair of ob-gyn at CareMount Medical in New York. Neighboring body parts’ nerves are interconnected, so pain that stems from one place might be felt in another. Most people’s uteruses tilt toward the front, so they feel uterus cramping in their abdomens. But if yours tilts in the reverse direction, which is less common but normal, you might feel cramps in the back or butt.   While there are plenty of period symptoms, we expect to see rear their bloody head when that time of the month rolls around, others still manage to catch us off guard. One of those things is butt pain – yep, you know the kind. The pain that seemingly comes out of nowhere and feels like someone’s jabbed a very sharp knife right up your bum.  The scientific term for feeling like someone has jabbed a sharp knife into your derriere is called proctalgia fugax, a fleeting anal pain during your period – commonly experienced, rarely discussed.  During your period, the same hormones which cause the uterus to contract and shed its lining, the prostaglandin, also cause troublesome contractions of the muscles around the anal canal causing muscle spasms. A literal pain in the butt.

EMPOWERED RELIEF

Luna syncs rhythmic breathing, heat & vibration to provide targeted pain relief. Luna was created to address an oft overlooked anal pain that is finally being talked about.  Luna creates a community of open discussion while physically tackling period relief.  Current suggested remedies include a warm bath, a heating pad and NSAID’s, but that does little to target the anal part of the GI tract that causes this distinct pain in an area of the body that can be uncomfortable to experience, as well as talk about.  Relief comes in acknowledging that this happens to many menstruating individuals.  To address this common and normal pain experienced during menstruation, Luna initiates gentle, external pelvic floor exercises.  Most pelvic floor devices work internally, requiring insertion.  During menstruation, this can be messy and undesirable, sometimes causing more discomfort.  Luna is a physical, external pelvic floor device that seeks to assist in relieving this distinct pain by creating a synergy between heat, vibration and breathing exercise to unite against proctalgia fugax, which can be fleeting, but the effects can be ongoing.

FEATURES

Luna is physical device used externally for a specific part of the body currently not addressed with period pain products that focus on the abdomen. Luna empowers users to define their role in their experience, with the ability to heat, vibrate and actuate at the same time or with each feature separately, providing a multi-faceted experience of their choosing.  Luna also connects with your mobile device through an app that syncs breathing exercises with the actions and rhythms of Luna.  Beginning with heat and a light vibration from Luna, the user inhales as guided by the app, holds the breath briefly, and as the user is prompted to exhale, Luna increases the vibration and actuation to maximize relief.  Don’t feel like breathing through it?  Luna can act solely as a physical device, but we think the integration of breathing techniques proven to manage physical pain will expedite relief.

MOBILE APP

The ability to integrate breathwork with action. Our app integrates with user selected features, combining breath work and pain relief for a holistic approach to proctalgia fugax.  While the pain can be fleeting, it can be reoccurring.  Luna knows this and seeks to assist beyond the physical device.  Diaphragmatic breathing is typically defined as an act of breathing deep into the lungs by flexing the diaphragm instead of breathing shallowly by flexing the rib cage. This form of breathing is marked by expansion of the stomach rather than the chest and is considered to be a healthier and fuller way to ingest oxygen. Diaphragmatic breathing is an essential component of relaxation training and is often recognized as a part of the bio-behavioral pain control. When used for the treatment of pain, this also involves the development of proper breathing techniques in coordination with body movement to avoid muscular guarding and the resulting referred pain.  Our app mimics the timing of Luna and breathes with the user, guiding them through the pain.
